Commemorating Construction Safety Week 2026
They are hard at work under the blazing Florida sun, pouring concrete, window fitting, and hanging drywall. They bring to life Miami’s tallest skyscrapers, Boca Raton’s hottest condo communities, and Manalapan’s most coveted mansions. They are the unsung heroes that construct every building you see around you. They are Florida’s construction workers.
Construction workers play an essential role in our society and especially in the building industry. May 4 – 8, 2026 is Construction Safety Week. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the construction and extraction industry experiences the second highest number of fatal occupational injuries of all the industries reported[1]. In fact, three construction workers are fatally injured each workday[2]. The top four causes of fatal job-related injuries for construction workers, responsible for more than 65% of construction-related deaths, include[3]:
- Falling
- Being struck by an object
- Electrocution
- Being stuck in between two objects
In addition to a high fatality rate, the dangerous nature of this field makes it injury-prone as well. The top four causes of these injuries include[4]:
- Being struck by an object or equipment
- Falls to a lower level
- Overexertion involving outside forces
- Exposure to harmful substances
The three pillars for this year’s Construction Safety Week are Recognize, Respond, and Respect. Industry members must recognize the presence of these hazards, respond by putting controls in place to mitigate risks, and “respect every hazard, every person, every life, and every role in safety”[5].
